Al Johnson

As an illustrator, fine artist painter, educator and mentor, Al Johnson has developed an inclusive vision that captures the classical, weaves it with the contemporary, and refracts it through the prism of his own individuality.

As Johnson further describes it – “Spiritually connected to this direction by creating a mixture of color and shapes through abstract expressionism allows the viewer to interpret what they feel.”

Johnson has exhibited internationally, from the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in Japan to Guangzhou International Art Fair in China to exhibitions in New York City, such as the curated exhibition by Jordan Cantor, former Assistant Curator of the Museum of Modern Art.

He has inspired and motivated collectors and fellow artists. His scope of work has crossed many genres, inclusive of creating original renderings for the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world.  Mr. Johnson created a 5×7-foot oil on canvas commissioned portrait of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and installed permanently in the Brooklyn Borough Hall. His “Energy Tile Series,” commissioned by the YMCA for permanent installation remains to inspire and reflect the spirit of movement.

Johnson has been listed as one of the Top 100 in the Romare Bearden Centennial Celebration. His  original painting “The Arrivals” was presented by the Council of the Democratic National Conference to First Lady Mrs. Obama. He accomplished an artist residency in France and a one man exhibition at the La Maison des Arts Gallery, Port-Barcares, France.

Al Johnson is currently an artist in residence at the RUSH Arts Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
